Plants are known to be nature's natural air purifiers for removing airborne contaminants, toxins and other harmful indoor irritants, but it's the 21st century now. I think we could be pushing these potted plant air purification technologies even further!

The cool new Bel-Air - Plant Powered Living Air Filter is a mini mobile greenhouse concept by French designer Mathieu Lehanneur in collaboration with David Edwards of Harvard University. Based on actual NASA research, they invented a truly unique device that draws indoor polluted air in through a fan, into a pyrex pod that houses a potted plant like a gerbera, philodendron, spathiophyllum, pathos or chlorophytum and forces it through the three main natural filters of the leaves, the roots, and the humidity before releasing it back out as purified air. Your regular old decorative house or office plant does this already, but it's capable of handling and processing much more and this unit really helps to accelerate that process along.

It's a cool idea and I really love the futuristic modern design, but I hope in future models they implement solar-powered fans since the plant is going to need sunlight anyways. It's an added on 2008-08-07

I really like this Apothecary Fern ($60) by floral lifestyle expert Julie Mulligan. This unique floral set comes with a rustic clear glass apothecary jar and lid modeled after the types of containers used to store and dispense medicinal drugs by apothecaries, a fresh green fern in a grow pot and a bag of green moss. The globalization of the food supply has led to an increased interest in different types of food. Written by a botany professor in language accessible to the general reader, this photographic guide is intended to be used by nutritionists, gardeners, ethnobotanists, culinary professionals, and food enthusiasts. The core of the volume is an encyclopedic description of about 350 food and flavor plants.

The one-page entries, arranged alphabetically by genus and species, follow a standardized format that includes a description of each plant, its origin and history, parts used, cultivation and harvesting, uses and properties, nutritional value, and notes with other special information. Introductory chapters are provided on each of the various categories of food plants: cereals, nuts, fruits, vegetables, beverages, sugar and starch, culinary herbs and spices. A quick guide for about 800 food plants is also included. Examples of specific entries include: Allium ameloprasum (leek), Lens culinaris (lentil), Musa acuminata (banana), Olea europa (olive), and Syzygium aromaticum (clove). The author has included many interesting sidelights. For example, we learn that the sweetener sorbitol comes from the fruit of the mountain ash; bananas have exceptional nutritional value; wild rice is the only cereal to be domesticated in historical times. Each of the described plants is illustrated with several excellent color photographs. A comprehensive subject index provides access to the contents, including references from the common name to the genus and species. A glossary and references for further reading are supplied.

I've attempted to grow all sorts of weird plants here on my desk for fun, but giant lily pads never crossed my mind until now! With the cool new Lily Pad Kit ($8) you can easily grow your own flowering water lillies in about two weeks. Just fill up the included bowl with water, drop in the lotus seeds, provide a little sunlight and in a couple of weeks, roots and sprouts will start forming and popping out floating lily pads. Unfortunately, the kit doesn't include any frogs, but since they are experts at finding lily pads, you never know if a few might turn up one morning.

I didn't know this, but lily pads can grow as large as two feet wide and can cover an entire shallow pond in only four feet of water. They also have the largest flower of any known plant in North America. So if you really want your lily pads to grow large, you're gonna need a bigger bowl and a bigger cubicle. added on 2008-08-06
