Betka was dropped off at a nunnery as an infant and raised in the cloister. She rebelled against the holy orders, however, when she ran off with a dark Slovakian traveller who stole her heart but gave her wisdom and new name.

Construction:
The busts are hand-sculpted from paperclay over a styrofoam and foil armature without the use of molds; each one is truly one-of-a-kind. The sculpting process involves several layers of paper-clay, which must be dried and sanded between each layer. The busts are lightweight and can stand on their own. Their eyes are handmade from acrylic and paperclay; their wigs are hand-made from mohair and/ or viscose. All embellishments (ribbon and/or lace) are affixed with both thread and glue for added security. They are finished with acrylic paints, pencil, archival pens and acrylic varnish. added on 2008-10-15
